What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, it’s always best to call us. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe Toothache: Persistent, intense pain that won’t subside.
  • Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth: Especially if accompanied by pain or sharp edges.
  • Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth: This requires immediate attention for the best chance of saving the tooth.
  • Lost Filling or Crown: While not always painful, it exposes the tooth and needs prompt repair.
  • Abscess or Swelling: A painful, pus-filled infection that can be dangerous if left untreated.
  • Object Caught Between Teeth: If you cannot remove it with floss.
  • Bleeding Gums: Unexplained, heavy, or persistent bleeding.
  • Trauma to the Mouth: Injuries to the teeth, gums, lips, or jaw.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency (Until You Reach Us)

  • For a knocked-out tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown (top part), rinse it gently with water (do not scrub), and try to reinsert it into the socket. If not possible, place it in a small container of milk or your cheek pouch and call us immediately.
  • For a severe toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water, gently floss to remove any lodged food, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Do NOT place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.
  • For a chipped/broken tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water. If bleeding, apply gauze. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth.
  • For a lost filling/crown: You can temporarily place a piece of sugar-free gum into the cavity or use over-the-counter dental cement if available. If a crown, you can try to reattach it with toothpaste or temporary dental adhesive.
